High School Presentations

Through three decades as a writer and education, I have developed a method for coaching students through the college application personal essay process that has helped hundreds of students get into their top colleges and universities. I’ve worked with private, public, and parochial schools, and with private clients from Chicago to Shanghai with extraordinary success.

One of the most rewarding and successful workshops I’ve created as a college essay expert begins with a spring, summer, or early fall visit to high schools. The workshop began as a service for smaller high schools for whom the lion’s share of essay support fell on the shoulders of a few overworked teachers and counselors.

Over time, the workshop has helped students from large and small private, public, and parochial schools. And year after year, the workshop also helped many schools address the often-glaring gap in the amount of support some students receive.

I have designed college essay workshops intended to address these issues in the lives of juniors and seniors. I begin the presentation with a brief explanation about the process, after which, students respond to prompts that urge even the most reticent students toward meaningful reflection about the occasions and circumstances of their lives.

This 90-minute presentation has helped countless students get past the stressful and sometimes paralyzing task of Just Getting Started. The C.A.P.E. High School workshop sets the foundation for what is arguably the most important writing assignment of their young lives.
